The Setting

The Exuma Cays

Exuma Yacht Club & Spa is minutes across Elizabeth Harbour in George Town, Exuma Bahamas.  The Exuma Cays span 300+ islands forming the 90-mile arc The Yachtsman’s Guide to The Bahamas refers to as, “… the most exquisite cruising ground in the western hemisphere.”

History places the Lucayan Indians settling Exuma, like other Bahamian Islands, as they parted from Central American Caribs (after whom the Caribbean Sea was named) in the 13th & 14th centuries.  The islands were left unsettled until the 1700’s – in the intervening period, the Exumas were hideouts and stashes for pirates (the location for Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean).

Great Exuma’s capital, George Town (founded 1793, to honor King George III) is the largest city in the district at 37 mi (60 km) in length.  Exuma Yacht Club & Spa is placed upon the island of Rolle Cay, named after Lord John Rolle, a British Loyalist settler.  Towns and areas of Great Exuma are named for him (including Rolleville and Rolletown).
